The Pilates method is a system of movements and also therapeutic exercise developed over a span of 60 years by German born physical therapy pioneer, Joseph H. Pilates. Originally, he defined and named his own work as “Contrology”.
Utilizing the specialized equipment he designed, the method works by:
- toning muscles
- stimulating circulation
- facilitating muscle flexibility, joint range of motion, proper muscular alignment
- promoting new neuromuscular patterns
- heightening body awareness
- improving coordination.
All these things combine to help prevent future re-injury and reduce – even alleviate – chronic pain.
Philosophy behind my teaching
The Pilates method offers you the opportunity to PRACTISE your movement skills, to be able to perform movements with the utmost mindfulness and freedom. The “laws of physics” will be integrated in your body (and mind) with the awareness of a wide range of correlations (regarding your own specific case).
During my Pilates classes you will not be met with fixed expectations on my side. You will have the time to explore movements and sensations and understand when and why you might need a change in your movement patterns. The exercise regime (your program changes from time to time) will help you go deeper in CONTROL and ARTICULATION without pushing you in the blank mind phase of mechanical movements.
Connected-ness
One of the main aims of the Pilates movements we do is becoming connected. Within ourselves.
You will have the so-called aha! experience which will occur more and more often.
Why being connected is soo important? Simply because you are in safer mode. Less prone to injury. Recognising our limits for that particular day makes us stay safe.
Physical stress
Movement can have a significant impact on our stress levels. Regular physical activity can help reduce stress because our bodies release endorphins (natural mood-boosters) while exercising and they also regulate stress hormones (e.g. cortisol).
One reason I have not stopped doing Pilates in the last 23 years!
